The aim of the project is to accompany the IT Nodes activities of the European Commission by developing demonstrators and organizing workshops in the selected areas, i.e., Technologies for Business Processes and Smart Organizations, Electronic Commerce, Multimedia content and tools and WWW technologies. The results of a highly successful previous European Commission supported project will be used in developing one of the demonstrators, that is, inter-enterprise workflow system developed within the INCO-DC 97 2496 MARIFlow project will be used for TBP. A tool will also be developed for processing multimedia content to be used for a cultural heritage.

We believe that Information technology take-up in Mediterranean countries requires more efforts to complement the IT Nodes activities; the advanced technology in well targeted areas should be explained and demonstrated through concrete demonstrators and training, in forums that include the industry, the end users, software developers, business organizations and the academics from these countries as well as from EU. HERMES project will achieve these objectives in the areas that are the intersection of IST and IT Nodes activities, that is, Key Action II and Key Action III which cover Technologies for Business Processes, Electronic Commerce, Multimedia Content and Tools and WWW technologies.

Three workshops will be organized in these areas, each with tutorials and technical papers. The workshops will focus on "smart organizations", "technologies for business processes"; "Multimedia content and tools" and "Access to Digital content". Workshops will also provide information on how to write proposals to the IST program. In this respect the IST work program will be explained; possible project ideas will be developed; different proposal types (RTD, take up, best practice, accompanying measure) will be explained. How to find partners and how the proposals are evaluated will also be detailed.

In each workshop there will be demonstration of a prototype software implementing a basic technology in the area of the workshop together with possible exploitations of the proposed technology in different application domains. The main aim of this step is to be able to demonstrate a concrete prototype to the participants of the workshop so that they can better comprehend and visualize how they can exploit the technology addressed in the workshop. The workshop will also highlight the possible exploitation of the addressed technology with various application scenarios. During the last day of the workshop smaller working groups will be formed with the aim of matching the partners to foster further collaboration.
